Dexter Rutecki in his iconic Mt Brighton lid.

We all have our online guilty pleasures. We know we should be working, but we just can’t help ourselves. Some people like to spend their time on Bring A Trailer or YachtWorld, but for me,  hunting for vintage ski hats has got me hooked. They just don’t make them like they used to and unlike car or boat shopping, these hats fit within my discretionary budget.

Why do I like hunting for these hats? It’s probably because I watched Aspen Extreme too much as a kid and thought Rutecki’s hat was dope. Or maybe it’s because skiers love it when you bust one out, with comments like “No Way! My dad had that hat”.

My latest purchase was a 100% wool Nordica hat circa 1982.

Here are some I’m keeping my eye on:

Vintage Imperial Headwear Purgatory Blue Corduroy Hat, Ski, Rope, Strap Back

Sick Jackson Hole baseball cap made of 100% wool WITH EAR PROTECTION! Forget about it…

80s/90s VTG Jackson Hole Wyoming Hat Ski 100% wool with ear protection

This hat checks a lot of my boxes, like new condition, solid ski area, vintage as it gets.

Vintage Crested Butte Colorado Corduroy Snapback Hat KC Caps Blue Adjustable Ski

Or how about this gem!? With working “Fiber Optics” lights.

1999 Vintage Flashing Light Telluride Colorado Skiing Baseball Cap Hat New

As you can tell, I have a soft spot for baseball-style hats, but here are some more traditional ski hats to check out.

Or what about this one? Simple, Clean, Hand Crafted in East Hardwick, VT, and only $10!
