Teton Gravity Research (TGR), is the global leader in action and adventure lifestyle media. Alternately, Helly Hansen has long been the maker of the most protective outdoor apparel on the planet. Now these two legends have joined forces and announced the collaborative release of Peak Evolution, starring former ski racer turned pro skier Jim Ryan.

The film, which premiered yesterday, was shot in TGR’s backyard at Jackson Hole Mountain Resort and Grand Teton National Park, as well as in Alaska. Throughout the movie, it details Ryan’s ski education and progression. From Jackson Hole newcomer to one of the most determined big-mountain skiers in the world Ryan is now featured athlete in TGR’s 27th annual film, Magic Hour.

Finding Mecca in Jackson Hole

Originally and East coast skier, Ryan was raised on the slopes of Killington. There began a two-decade-long racing career that when it was over, left Ryan lost and unsure of what to do next. Then, an unexpected call from a friend “saved” him, and Ryan found himself in the Mecca of big mountain skiing: Jackson Hole, Wyoming.

One Run at a Time, a Big Mountain Prodigy Emerges

With a desire to learn and be mentored, he committed to a path towards professional big mountain skiing one run at a time. Peak Evolution is a tribute to Ryan’s evolution and growth as a skier. Ryan tackles the Tetons’ notorious lines with the confidence of a seasoned veteran. Slicing through the unforgiving terrain on South, Middle, and Grand Teton he blends speed and finesse that is rarely seen on such technically demanding runs. Watching him navigate these slopes is a masterclass in precision and control. It’s a testament to the years of dedication he’s poured into his craft. This is Ryan’s coming-of-age story, one that leaves him firmly established as a must-watch TGR athlete.

TGR

“Skiing has always been my favorite way to grow. It started at JHMR and it moved into Grand Teton National Park, and now I want to apply the skillset in bigger mountains,” Ryan said.

Learning from TGR Legends, Pushing the Limits

TGR Big Mountain skiing

Tackle bigger mountains he does, as Peak Evolution also recounts a trip to Petersburg, Alaska. There, Ryan undertook the challenge with TGR legends Griffin Post and Sam Smoothy and snowboarder Taylor Godber.

However, Peak Evolution is more than just a ski film. It is as much about education and collaboration as it is about elite skiing, and Ryan’s takeaways from the expedition show that even though he’s at the top of his profession, there’s much more to learn. You can now watch Peak Evolution on the TGR YouTube Channel and TGRtv.

Jackson Hole Mountain Resort (JHMR) is thrilled to announce the start of the 2023-24 winter season on Opening Day, Friday, November 24. The abundant snowfall from last season, which set a new record for Rendezvous Bowl, has provided ample excitement for the upcoming winter. The resort’s tireless snowmaking efforts have complemented Mother Nature’s generous snowfall totalling 62 inches at the summit and 33 inches at mid-mountain. This impressive coverage will give skiers and snowboarders plenty of terrain to explore when the season kicks off just after Thanksgiving.

Kicking off the Longest Season on Record

*Photo Credit: Jackson Hole Mountain Resort

This Opening Day marks the beginning of Jackson Hole Mountain Resort’s longest season ever. Lifts will be spinning until April 14, for a grand total of 143 days of winter fun.

Visitors can access a variety of beginner and intermediate terrain on Opening Day via two lifts: Teewinot and Après Vous. Early season conditions are to be expected and all guests are advised to stay out of closed areas and be aware of potential hazards.

JHMR is hopeful to announce additional terrain openings for the weekend of December 2-3.

“We’re ready to welcome our guests to our 2023-24 season at the Jackson Hole Mountain Resort on Opening Day!” exclaimed JHMR President Mary Kate Buckley. “Our continued investments in snowmaking, coupled with our grooming crews working around the clock, will support our opening on schedule this Friday, Nov. 24 at 9 a.m. Lift service will be limited, and we urge caution, as early season conditions exist. The weather forecast provides for cold temperatures, ideal for continued snowmaking and grooming and improved conditions.”

Enhanced Guest Experience Continues

* Photo Credit: Jackson Hole Mountain Resort

For the fourth consecutive year in 2023-24, JHMR is continuing its efforts to enhance the guest experience on the mountain and throughout the resort. They will once again be limiting the sale of daily tickets in order to manage capacity.

JHMR emphasizes that daily ticket sales are limited and available for advance purchase, and that tickets may sell out. Ikon Pass and Mountain Collective pass holders are required to make reservations for lift access. JHMR recommends making reservations well in advance. Guests with a JHMR Winter 2023-24 Season Pass can ski or ride on any day indicated by their pass type. Others purchasing day passes are encouraged to do so in advance as they may sell out.

Inaugural Ski in Jeans Day at Jackson Hole Mountain Resort

To celebrate the new winter season, JHMR will host its first-ever Ski In Jeans Day on Saturday, December 9. In doing so, they are aiming to break the world record for most people skiing and riding in jeans. Who knew such a thing even existed? However, throughout the day, JHMR will offer $25 lift tickets to all guests. There will also be $25 performance equipment rentals, $100 off group lessons and live music to kick off the season and pay homage to the most iconic pants in the West.

Winter at Jackson Hole Mountain Resort Begins

This Friday Jackson Hole Mountain Resort prepares to welcome skiers and snowboarders for the 2023-24 winter season. With its limited lift ticket sales, managed capacity and ongoing investments in snowmaking and grooming, it is clear the resort is committed to providing an exceptional experience for all guests. Consequently, visitors will have ample opportunities to enjoy the mountain’s legendary terrain. On top of that with events like Ski In Jeans Day, JHMR is also fostering a fun and welcoming atmosphere that will make this winter season one to remember.

Picture this, you and your friends are hanging in the hot tub apres ski. While you’re soaking your sore muscles, sharing a few beers and laughter, your spirits (pun intended) grow bolder. Suddenly you decide to go full send from the top of the hot tub into the snow in just your swim suit. You squeal with delight as you roll around in the powder, snow melting on your hot skin. Sound familiar? Odds are it does. As it turns out your après ski hot tub shenanigans might have been the elixir you needed to help your muscles recover and get back on the mountain the next day. Welcome to the world of ice baths.

As winter approaches, ski and snowboard enthusiasts eagerly anticipate hitting the slopes for an adrenaline-fueled adventure. Skiing and riding not only offer an exhilarating experience but also provide a full-body workout. However, the physical demands of skiing can take a toll on your muscles and joints. To optimize your recovery and enhance your performance, consider incorporating ice baths, particularly the use of the Ice Barrel, into your post-skiing routine.

The Power of Ice Baths

Ice baths, also known as cold water immersion therapy, are not new. Athletes have been using them for centuries as a method of recovery. The principle is rather simple. Ice baths rely on the application of cold therapy to reduce inflammation and promote muscle recovery. When exposed to cold temperatures, blood vessels constrict. This helps to flush out waste products, reduce swelling and decrease muscle soreness.

Benefits of Ice Baths for Skiers

  1. Reduces Inflammation: Skiing and snowboarding can be strenuous and result in muscle and joint soreness. Ice baths help to reduce inflammation by decreasing blood flow to the sore areas. This ultimately reduces swelling and alleviates pain.
  2. Speeds Up Recovery: Whether you are hardcore and really getting after it or just a weekend warrior, skiing and snowboarding can cause microscopic muscle damage. Ice baths help repair these micro-tears by stimulating blood circulation and delivering oxygen and nutrients to the muscles. In the end this promotes faster recovery for your body.
  3. Relieves Muscle Soreness: Skiing and snowboarding involve repetitive movements, especially in the lower body. Constant use of the same muscles over and over can lead to excessive soreness. Ice baths offer immediate relief from muscle soreness and stiffness by numbing nerve endings and aiding in recovery.
  4. Enhances Performance: If you are looking to improve your overall performance on the slopes incorporate regular ice bath sessions. Reduced muscle fatigue and optimal recovery, helps you maintain peak performance throughout your ski trip.
  5. Keeps You Warm: Yes, you read that right. Regular ice baths can actually keep you warmer in colder temperatures (and colder in hot temperatures too). Using the ice bath converts white fat which is stored to brown fat which is used for fuel. When brown fat is activated, your body can better regulate your internal temperature thereby keeping you warmer in those cold winter conditions.
  6. Mental Fortitude: Obviously, the weather in the mountains can be quite cold. Regular ice baths can build your mental toughness while conditioning you to these colder temperatures. The more ice baths you take, the more your body and mind will become accustomed to the colder temperatures thereby allowing you to prolong your ski day.

The Ice Barrel Advantage

Ice Barrel 300 photographed by Seth Lowe

If you have ever been around a training facility you’ve probably seen huge tubs of ice and water just waiting for athletes to get into. While these may work just fine, they are far from efficient. The Ice Barrel offers a far more optimized and convenient option. The Ice Barrel does not take up too much space, is (moderately) portable and very user-friendly. The design, particularly the 300 model, (which I demoed for this story) allows for a comfortable and immersive experience. Ultimately, this ensures maximum contact between your body and the cold water.

Some of the key features of the Ice Barrel include:

  1. Optimal Temperature Control: The insulated Ice Barrel 300 maintains a consistent temperature range. After the initial cooling down period with bags of ice, the tub typically maintains temperatures between 40°F to 50°F (4°C to 10°C). This is ideal for cold therapy.
  2. Quick Recovery: The Ice Barrel is not necessarily small but it is compact. This is by design and enables faster cooling of the water. By limiting the time required to reach the desired temperature your recovery process is accelerated.
  3. Versatility: The Ice Barrel is suitable for ski trips with friends and family. It is ‘moderately’ portable and allows you to take it wherever your skiing adventures may lead. However, if you have your own vacation house, it is probably best to just leave it there.
  4. Easy Maintenance: The Ice Barrel is easy to maintain with Ice Barrel’s maintenance kit. Drain the water first. Then, using their cleaning solution and brush, scrub the interior of the tub down thoroughly and rinse it out. Once clean you can refill it and use their silicone ice blocks to get the barrel back down to temp.

Prioritize Your Recovery With Ice Baths

Ice Barrel 300 photographed by Seth Lowe

As skiing and snowboarding enthusiasts, it’s important to prioritize our recovery. Doing so will ensure we can continue enjoying the slopes to the fullest. By incorporating ice baths, such as the Ice Barrel, into your post-mountain routine you can significantly enhance your recovery process. They reduce inflammation, speed up recovery and relieve muscle soreness. This will ultimately enhance your performance while offering a refreshing and effective way to keep your skiing adventures on track. Turns out our après ski rolling around in the snow antics of our youth was actually the key to recovery just in a more simplistic way.

This weekend, Idaho’s Tamarack Resort is set to drop back and toss a Hail Mary. Their partner on the other end of this, is none other than Boise State University athletics. As part of a new collaboration, Tamarack Resort has connected with Boise State athletics for what can only be described as a winner for both teams. This Saturday, October 28 Tamarack Resort is giving away up to 35,000 single-day lift tickets for the upcoming 2023/2024 winter ski season in one of the largest sponsored giveaways in Boise State football history.

A giveaway of this magnitude does not come around very often and Tamarack Resort President, Scott Turlington, is extremely excited for it. Turlington eagerly stated, “Tamarack is thrilled to team up with Boise State Athletics, sponsor the Bronco Sports App, and provide fans with the opportunity to experience the thrill of skiing or snowboarding at our resort this winter. During the game this weekend, attendees will have the chance to win a complimentary lift ticket. All they have to do is scan a QR code displayed on the stadium’s jumbotron screen. Fans can also visit the website that is listed, just in case this mountain sized QR code doesn’t work. Additionally, if you have the Bronco Sports App you will receive a notification on your smartphone, directing them to fill out a form for a chance to win. That makes it rather easy for Broncos fans around the country to also register and win.

The process itself is a no brainer. Visit the site, complete the form and then participants will receive an email containing a unique promo code and instructions on how to redeem their complimentary lift ticket on the Tamarack website. Once you have entered your promo code and personal details, winners will receive a confirmation email. This email will have a QR code, which can be redeemed at one of the resort’s six ticket kiosks.

A Thank You to Bronco Nation

Tamarack President Scott Turlington is not the only one excited about this collaboration. Boise State Director of Athletics, Jeramiah Dickey, is too recently expressing his gratitude. Dickey excitedly said, “Bronco Nation has answered the call this season and created a game day atmosphere that has been loud and electric. Tamarack’s unique and generous promotion is just one more way to say thanks to our fans.” There is no doubt that this Hail Mary is a win for both teams, especially given the multiple other prizes fans can win.

The craft beer and ski town world is buzzing with excitement as the Great American Beer Festival kicks off this week in Denver Colorado. This year’s event promises to be one of the best and will once again include a major presence from many of our favorite ski town breweries. One such example includes the newly formed Pure Madness Group. Formed less than a year ago, the parent company of Roadhouse Brewing Co. and Melvin Brewing Co., is gearing up for its debut at the Great American Beer Festival (GABF). With an impressive lineup of events and collaborations, Pure Madness is set to make a splash in the beer scene and raise funds for a worthy cause.

The Cosmic After Party

Pure Madness Group is teaming up with Maui Brewing, Modern Times, Creature Comforts and Crown & Hops to host the Cosmic After Party on Thursday, September 21st, at the iconic Denver Sports Castle. This vibrant event will not only feature live music from talented artists like Mikey Thunder and Ghost.Wav, but also immersive art installations by Skyline Productions.

Attendees can also expect a fantastic selection of brews from the sponsor breweries, a full bar and even a silent auction. To support relief efforts in Maui, the event will donate 100% of the proceeds from limited-edition event shirts and suggest a minimum donation of $10 per entry.

“Can’t wait to get into acid jams and hip hop with our compadres at Maui, Creature and Crowns, as well as all our friends and fans,” says Colby Cox, co-founder of Pure Madness Group. “We’re gonna kill one bird with two stones: Throw a raging party and raising some money for our ohana on the island.”

Pure Madness Group will have a featured booth at the GABF Convention Center, to showcase their incredible range of beers. With a live DJ setting the mood, attendees will have the opportunity to explore the beloved Melvin Bus and Roadhouse VW Van. The booth will offer a variety of brews from both Roadhouse and Melvin. This includes limited edition favorites like the Pure Madness IPA, a collaboration between the two breweries.

PAIRED Event and Culinary Delights

True to its roots as a food-friendly beer, Roadhouse Brewing Co. and Pure Madness co-founder Gavin Fine, a renowned chef and restaurateur, will be featured as a chef at the annual PAIRED event. This culinary extravaganza will showcase the perfect marriage of beer and cuisine, pushing boundaries and tantalizing taste buds.

“We are excited to be back at GABF and participating in PAIRED again,” notes Fine. “We’re always pushing boundaries and can’t wait to share our latest creations with craft beer lovers and officially introduce them to Pure Madness.”

Pure Madness Takes Over Denver

The fun, however, does not stop there for the Pure Madness Group. They will also be making appearances across Denver throughout the weekend. You can join them at Whiskey Tango Foxtrot on Thursday for tap takeover with fellow Wyoming brewery Snake River Brewing. Then, on Friday night, head over to Appaloosa Grill for another unforgettable tap takeover evening with Pure Madness.

Bringing Pure Madness to GABF

The Great American Beer Festival is about to witness the arrival of Pure Madness Group, an exciting new player in the craft beer industry. Experience the Cosmic After Party, where beer, music, art and community converge on Denver all for a good cause. Then indulge in their featured booth at GABF and dive into the culinary wonders at their PAIRED event. With their impressive lineup of events, collaborations and delectable brews, Pure Madness is set to make a lasting impression at GABF.
