If you’re into backcountry skiing or splitboarding touring you should be aware that there’s a company out of Montana with the sole focus of producing the world’s best skins and they are worth checking out.

Big Sky Mountain Products (BSMP) out of Bozeman, Montana has a goal of providing skiers and snowboarders with the most reliable, durable, and sustainable climbing skins in the world without sacrificing performance.

They’ve been working for years developing long lasting glue that performs well in sub-zero temps, super durable tip and tail connectors, and a plush skin surface that stands up to the most abrasive conditions in world. Their skins have put through quality control tests in extreme environments like Antarctica, The Himalayas, and Denali and have passed with flying colors.

“Our mohair mix and synthetic climbing skins are at least as light and fast as any European climbing skins in their respective classes. Their low-profile build and 20cm tail straps minimize bulk and weight, while their low-angle plush gives them superior glide. Our skins’ blend of reliability and performance makes them the perfect choice for both larger expeditions and shorter tours in your home range.”

One thing that we really appreciate about BSMP is their commitment to the industry’s environmental impact. BSMP offers a state of the art reglue service ($79.99) to keep skins out of the landfill when they’re stickiness starts to degrade. They offer this service not only for their own product but for all skin brands (kudos on that, super awesome).

REGLUE YOUR SKINS THE RIGHT WAY…BSMP’s mechanized process is the only way to reglue your skins if you want a guaranteed high-quality, long-lasting, safe, and convenient finished product. Rather than dealing with the mess of DIY, fill out the form below and send your skins off to BSMP. In a short time, you’ll receive them back and your glue will be good as (or better than) new.

If you’re shopping skins we highly recommend you consider a set from BSMP. If you’re looking for a good place to start their Mohair Mix Endurance Ski Skins are a great example of what you can expect from this sweet little Montana company. Cheers!

Here’s a handy guide from Big Sky Mountain Products on how to cut their ski skins:

One Run at a Time: Jim Ryan’s Climb to TGR Stardom in “Peak Evolution” https://unofficialnetworks.com/2023/12/19/one-run-at-a-time-jim-ryans-climb-to-tgr-stardom-in-peak-evolution/ Tue, 19 Dec 2023 16:53:12 +0000 https://unofficialnetworks.com/?p=15041792 *All Photos Courtesy of TGR Teton Gravity Research (TGR), is the global leader in action and adventure lifestyle media. Teton Gravity Research (TGR), is the global leader in action and adventure lifestyle media. Alternately, Helly Hansen has long been the maker of the most protective outdoor apparel on the planet. Now these two legends have joined forces and announced the collaborative release of Peak Evolution, starring former ski racer turned pro skier Jim Ryan.

The film, which premiered yesterday, was shot in TGR’s backyard at Jackson Hole Mountain Resort and Grand Teton National Park, as well as in Alaska. Throughout the movie, it details Ryan’s ski education and progression. From Jackson Hole newcomer to one of the most determined big-mountain skiers in the world Ryan is now featured athlete in TGR’s 27th annual film, Magic Hour.

Finding Mecca in Jackson Hole

Originally and East coast skier, Ryan was raised on the slopes of Killington. There began a two-decade-long racing career that when it was over, left Ryan lost and unsure of what to do next. Then, an unexpected call from a friend “saved” him, and Ryan found himself in the Mecca of big mountain skiing: Jackson Hole, Wyoming.

One Run at a Time, a Big Mountain Prodigy Emerges

With a desire to learn and be mentored, he committed to a path towards professional big mountain skiing one run at a time. Peak Evolution is a tribute to Ryan’s evolution and growth as a skier. Ryan tackles the Tetons’ notorious lines with the confidence of a seasoned veteran. Slicing through the unforgiving terrain on South, Middle, and Grand Teton he blends speed and finesse that is rarely seen on such technically demanding runs. Watching him navigate these slopes is a masterclass in precision and control. It’s a testament to the years of dedication he’s poured into his craft. This is Ryan’s coming-of-age story, one that leaves him firmly established as a must-watch TGR athlete.

TGR

“Skiing has always been my favorite way to grow. It started at JHMR and it moved into Grand Teton National Park, and now I want to apply the skillset in bigger mountains,” Ryan said.

Learning from TGR Legends, Pushing the Limits

TGR Big Mountain skiing

Tackle bigger mountains he does, as Peak Evolution also recounts a trip to Petersburg, Alaska. There, Ryan undertook the challenge with TGR legends Griffin Post and Sam Smoothy and snowboarder Taylor Godber.

However, Peak Evolution is more than just a ski film. It is as much about education and collaboration as it is about elite skiing, and Ryan’s takeaways from the expedition show that even though he’s at the top of his profession, there’s much more to learn. You can now watch Peak Evolution on the TGR YouTube Channel and TGRtv.

This season at Selkirk Powder Co., nestled in northern Idaho near the Schweitzer ski area, is shaping up to be extraordinary with two major reasons to celebrate.

First, Selkirk Powder turns 21! Contrary to rumors of a shutdown, Selkirk has successfully negotiated an agreement with Schweitzer’s new owner, Alterra Mountain Company, securing access to the familiar and beloved 4,500 acres of terrain for this season. Since carving its first snowcat trails in 2003, the company, under Chief Guide Ken Barrett, has evolved into a seasoned provider of winter sports adventures. With a team of 20 experts, Selkirk now boasts 78 named cat ski runs, exhilarating guided snowmobile tours in partnership with Polaris Adventures, and is a proud member of the American Institute for Avalanche Research and Education (AIARE), offering comprehensive avalanche education.

The second cause for celebration is the expansion of their playground. Selkirk Powder has been granted a permit for an additional 6,250 acres by the Idaho Department of Lands. This expansion means new territories to explore, with plans to map a high traverse along the Selkirk Crest, including the areas around Mts. Casey and Atlasta, opening up fresh routes and adventures.

“I so treasure everyday in this incredible environment. I enjoy being in sequence, in tune with this natural world. It’s infinitely entertaining and deeply mysterious.

Meet Mr. Steve Fuller who has been working as “The Winter Keeper” in Yellowstone National Park since 1973. Steve sticks around the park long after the summer tourists have packed up and returned to civilization and it thought that he has lived in the park’s interior for longer than anybody in human history (perhaps the indigenous peoples migrated out during the harsh winter?) It’s a solitary existence but Fuller thrives in it. Fascinating lifestyle, if you’re a loner I couldn’t think of a better way to make a living.

Gnarly little inbound avalanche triggered at St. Anton am Arlberg in the Tyrolean Alps by Austrian freeride skier Tao Kreibich. Tao provided some background information on the conditions of the face he was riding saying that it had been avalanche bombed before he skied it. Here’s how Tao describes the slide:

For everybody a few things to know before you start commenting…

The face was bombed in the morning, it was avalanche danger 2. Everything we triggered was a 10cm top layer which stayed on a 20meter wide spine while bombing so we knew it will go pretty sure. Our outruns were great. I know it looks pretty crazy at first but turned out to be nothing dangerous at all. I don’t want to animate anybody to go in the backcountry and do the things we do. Freeriding is a dangerous sport and everybody needs to know his limits and take risks according to that!

In a heartening turn of events for the ski community, Indy Pass and Unofficial Networks have teamed up to breathe new life into Hickory Ski Center in Warrensburg, New York. This collaborative effort marks a significant milestone for the beloved ski center, set to operate its lifts again after an eight-year hiatus.

The Hickory Ski Center, with its rich history dating back to 1946 and founded by 10th Mountain Division veterans, had been a cornerstone for the local ski community. Its recent struggles with operational costs, especially soaring insurance prices, had cast a shadow over its future. However, the center’s relentless spirit and the support from Tim Konrad, the publisher of Unofficial Networks, and Erik Mogensen, CEO of Entabeni Systems and Indy Pass, have sparked a glimmer of hope.

Konrad’s personal connection and passion for Hickory, coupled with his awareness of the center’s struggles, propelled him to reach out to Mogensen. This call ignited a chain reaction of support, leading to Indy Pass and Unofficial Networks stepping in to offer a much-needed lifeline. Mogensen’s vision to involve more organizations in supporting independent ski areas aligns perfectly with this initiative, offering a sustainable future for these cherished local gems.

The partnership has resulted in Hickory Ski Center reopening as well as joining the Indy Pass for the 2023/24 season.

Sue Catana, Hickory’s manager and the daughter of its founders, expresses deep gratitude for this intervention. The collaboration between Unofficial Networks, Indy Pass, and Entabeni Systems not only ensures the operation of lifts for the season but also brings hope for many more seasons to come. Furthermore, the team from Indy Pass and Entabeni will offer their expertise in streamlining operations at Hickory, reinforcing the center’s journey toward sustainability.

The collaboration of Indy Pass and Unofficial Networks in the revival of Hickory Ski Center reaffirms the two entities’ dedication to safeguarding the unique culture and legacy of independent skiing.

In commemorating this remarkable achievement, we are reminded of the immense strength of community cooperation and joint efforts. It is our hope that the rejuvenation of Hickory Ski Center extends beyond a local victory; it serves as a shining example and source of inspiration for small, independent ski areas across the globe.

Official Press Release:

INDY PASS AND UNOFFICIAL NETWORKS TEAM UP TO KEEP NEW YORK’S HICKORY SKI CENTER OPEN

23/24 INDY PASS WAITLIST TO CLOSE ON DECEMBER 10th

GRANBY, COLORADO – Indy Pass and Unofficial Networks announced today that they have combined efforts to provide financial assistance to Hickory Ski Center in Warrensburg, New York, so the resort may run its lifts for the first time in eight years.

The ski center will join the Indy Pass for the 2023/24 season, and season passes go on sale today at skihickory.com. Hickory pass holders will be eligible to purchase Indy AddOn Passes at a 30% discount. The Indy Pass will close the 2023/2024 waitlist on Sunday, December 10th.

Hickory Ski Center was founded in 1946 by veterans of the 10th Mountain Division and has served the surrounding community and offered uphill traffic only since 2016. With rising costs, specifically insurance, the ski area faced an uncertain future until their plight caught the attention of Tim Konrad, publisher of Unofficial Networks.

“My family spends much of the winter in the Adirondacks, and I have been ski touring at Hickory since 2015. Over the years, I’ve been keeping close tabs on their struggle to reopen lifts, and when I learned how far they had come and how close they were to achieving their goal, I knew we had to do something. So I called Erik at Indy Pass to discuss how we could offer our support,” said Konrad.

“After Tim called, we did a quick assessment and decided that Entabeni would step in on this one. It is important to recognize the collaboration between Entabeni, Indy Pass and Unofficial Networks. The more organizations we can get involved to stabilize these small, independent areas, the better our chances of scaling this movement,” said Erik Mogensen, CEO of Entabeni and Indy Pass.

“We have been working with our Hickory skiing community to help overcome the financial obstacles that could prevent the opening of the lifts at Hickory. The emergence of Tim and Erik with their lifeline has put us in a position to operate this season with lift certification, and hopefully for many more to come,” said Sue Catana, Hickory manager and daughter of founders Fran and Hans Winbauer.

The Indy Pass and Entabeni team will also consult with Hickory management on how to streamline operations and become more sustainable.

Indy Pass and parent company, Entabeni Systems support independent resorts from Europe to Japan, but primarily in the US and Canada. On October 18, 2023, Black Mountain, New Hampshire, announced that support from Indy Pass would enable it to remain open for the coming season and has since hired a new GM and retained ski resort turn-around expert Andy Shephard to help secure a buyer.

About the Indy Pass –
