The first ski stopper, the first ski down jacket, those iconic old school mirrored sunglasses…Klaus Obermeyer’s list of innovations is impressive. This video is a clear cut marketing tool but its executed so well I just had to share. Incredible dude, incredible company. Heads up, they reissued those classic Rallye Sunglasses. Mad expensive at $500 but hot damn are they slick. As a self-proclaimed expert on cool shades I can certify these are fresh as they get  BUY HERE:

RALLYE SUNGLASSES:

As we celebrate Obermeyer’s 75 years, the Rallye is our latest celebration of timeless design, quality, and craft. These shades could’ve been spotted on a t-bar in the 1960s, but we made them by hand in the French Alps for today. Handcrafted products inspired by evergreen style made by artists in the Alps for your upcoming ski season. This is a product that we think will make a crater when it drops! We built these sunglasses as a nod to our past for the world to enjoy today.

The Rallye sunglasses use handcrafted, Italian-made acetate. The cotton-based acetate is mixed with acids and polymers to produce lightweight frames that are comfortable during long sessions of use. The frames also feature premier durability, holding their shape through years of continued use.

Creating sunglasses this way is a labor of love—over 700 minutes of craftsmanship and 300 unique steps go into each Rallye frame, made by hand in France where eyewear has been at the forefront of quality for over a century.

The lenses are manufactured in Calvados, France, through a process that begins with organic materials like sand and ash. This mixture is heated, melted, and hardened into a mountain-ready glass. The lenses are then painstakingly polished to achieve the highest possible level of clarity for the user. The result is a distortion-free, scratch-resistant lens that is both ruggedly durable and infinitely recyclable.

Like all Obermeyer products, the Rallye sunglasses are truly made to last a lifetime.

If you still want to be riding lifts and making turns after 100 rotations around the sun we suggest you take notes because Klaus Obermeyer just broke off some knowledge for Outside Magazine about skiing longevity that we could all stand to benefit from.

Here’s the secret sauce: proper diet, low impact cardio and aikido
DIET:
Klaus didn’t go into specifics about the makeup of his diet but did say he maintains a strict caloric intake.

Low Impact Cardio: Klaus’s modalities of choice when it comes to cardio are swimming (1 hour each morning) and hitting the cardio equipment in the gym (recumbent bike and elliptical).

“You have to keep exercising. Your health should be your number-one priority, then your marriage, and then your work. Sometimes the order of importance changes, but your health is important. Your body carries your brain. If your body is healthy, then your brain has a chance to be healthy, too.”

He, like the great and powerful Steven Seagal, is a practitioner of  the modern Japanese martial art of aikido which utilizes an opponent’s movements and strength against them. Klaus believes there are many lessons from his aikido practice that are applicable to his mountain lifestyle:

“It’s almost like a religion. It’s a different way to look at problems. Every problem is an opportunity to learn something new. That’s the way I try to look at life. You learn to like the problems.”

Finally, what keeps the 100-year-old skiing or does skiing keep the 100-year-old? Skiing is what keeps in shape, keeps him social, and gives him a positive mental outlook, all key factors to a long life:

“Sport makes life sweet. You get in good shape, you feel good about your body and your spirit, and you enjoy life, so it’s easy to look at things positively.”

UnofficialNetworks is sending out a massive happy birthday greeting to newly minted centenarian Klaus Obermeyer. The founder of Sport Obermeyer turned 100 on Monday and celebrated at a party in Aspen along with hundreds of community members.

Obermeyer was born in Germany in 1919 and moved to Aspen in 1947 where he started Sport Obermeyer. News9 reports during his first year as a ski instructor at Aspen, Klaus noticed all of the inadequacies of his students’ gear and headed to the drawing table. Klaus created nearly a dozen ski industry firsts, including quilted down parkas turtlenecks, dual construction ski boots, pre-shaped gloves, mirrored sunglasses, and high altitude sunscreen.

More than 70 years on and Klaus still calls Aspen home and is regular a regular in his shop and on the slopes (he says these days skiing is easier than walking). Happy birthday to Klaus, cheers to many more!

Here’s a recent video from Aspen Times about Klaus’s personal philosophy on living a healthy and happy life, as well as his daily routines that keep him going every day. Take notes whippersnappers:

Last month 99 year old Klaus Obermeyer reminded us that snowboarding gave skiing the gift of float and forever changed the way we ski powder:

“Snowboarding has given a great present to skis and that is wider skis.”
