One of the few open mountains in the Northeast, Stratton, had to close early due to deteriorating conditions.

Over the past 24 hours, a large number of Northeast ski resorts have posted messages like this on their social media pages:

Currently, a major rainstorm is making its way through the Northeast. With most in the region receiving inches of rain, many ski resorts announced that they won’t be operating today. Other ski resorts, like Killington and Stratton, announced that they’d be closing early due to the deteriorating conditions. A growing amount of mountains, like Saddleback and Pleasant Mountain, have decided to remain closed on Tuesday due to various factors. The snow on natural terrain has melted, and mountain operations will have their work cut out for them on the trails that have relied on snowmaking. In addition, flooding is now an issue, especially at Sunday River.

It’s been a mixed bag for the Northeast this season. The ski season has been great for Northern Vermont, as they’ve had some solid base-building storms. Unfortunately, this hosing is likely going to damage the natural snowpack. Other parts of the region, like where I live in the Upper Valley of New Hampshire, have been less lucky, with more rain than snow.

After the rain comes through, it seems like many ski resorts will have some chances to make snow in the evenings.

Let’s hope the Heat Miser loses this winter. He’s too much.

Bummer news out of Montana where America’s only summer ski area is closed due to lack of snow. Beartooth Basin opened on May 26th with the promise to operate “until the snow melts.” Unfortunately Mother Nature did not cooperate and heavy rains took a major toll on their snowpack forcing the closure. Wouldn’t hold out too much hope but they reopen if they get fresh snow.  Regardless of how short the season was, we want to thank the good folks at Beartooth for all their hard work. Cheers!

If you haven’t been checking out the Weather Channel and you aren’t from Colorado, there’s a decent chance you don’t know about the unprecedented amount of rain the state has been getting throughout the past month. It’s actually quite incredible, how green the typically brown foothills are right now, but, in some areas of the state, it’s been a good bit terrifying.

Images from June 12 out of Boulder, specifically, are fairly spooky, with severe thunder and hail storms leading to major flooding. Flash flooding is terrifying. Make sure to listen to your local weather and take warnings seriously!

Cloud seeding feels like something out of a sci-fi story. Creating clouds? Changing Earth’s weather patterns? Playing God? That’s not exactly what cloud seeding is, though. With current technology, we don’t actually have the ability to create clouds or storms, we just have the ability to give existing clouds and storms a little boost.

Cloud seeding works by burning silver iodine through an ice nucleus generator and carrying those particles into the clouds, allowing snowflakes to form around the generated silver iodine particles. Basically, it allows water that wouldn’t normally fall out of a cloud to actually fall out of a cloud.

Snowstorms are actually pretty inefficient at producing precipitation. All cloud seeding does is help improve a storm’s efficiency.”  – President of North American Weather Consultants Garrett Cammans according to 9News

Still confused? Me too, don’t worry. I’m definitely not a scientist, and I’m even worse at explaining science than I am at understanding it, so rather than trying to make it clear through my writing, I’ll let the people’s meteorologist Chris Tomer explain it.

A new operation planned for Boulder County in Colorado could be the first of its kind on the front range of the state. Just west of Longmont, the seeding is set to take place along the St. Vrain headwaters beginning this winter. The organization at its helm, the North American Weather Consultants, hopes to produce an extra 10% of additional snowpack. Is that a ton? No, not really. It won’t save the planet, that’s for sure, but it does have the potential to increase the growing season in the area, create healthier soils, and even create more wildfire resistant land.

What If All Precipitation Fell As Snow? How Much Would Your City Get? https://unofficialnetworks.com/2022/08/08/all-precipitation-snow/ Mon, 08 Aug 2022 12:38:09 +0000 https://unofficialnetw.wpengine.com/?p=15001919 The map above was created by Brian Brettschenider (@Climatologist49) to explore a question that every skier, snowboarder, and snow lover in the country has considered at one point or another- What if all this rain was actually snow?! The map above was created by Brian Brettschenider (@Climatologist49) to explore a question that every skier, snowboarder, and snow lover in the country has considered at one point or another- What if all this rain was actually snow?!

Brettschneider used average precipitation data from 1990-2020 and the assumption that every 1 inch of rain is equivalent to 10 inches of snow.

Seattle, and the surrounding area, would “benefit” the most from all of their rain turning to snow. The map estimates that Seattle would be buried in over 1000″ of snow annually. That might be considered an inhospitable location for most people, but I’m not saying I wouldn’t move there…

The surprise “winners” in this hypothetical dream scenario are New Orleans and Miami. These cities receive bucket loads of rain throughout the year which would apparently equate to 500″ to 1000″ of snow annually.

Imagine the sun-kissed beaches of Miami and the lively Bourbon Street of New Orleans turned into a winter wonderland buried by feet of snow.

It wouldn’t beneficial for downhill skiers considering both cities are extremely flat, but snowshoeing and cross-country skiers would enjoy it, right?

This map is silly but I enjoyed imagining a bunch of hypotheticals of how drastically different this country would look if all precipitation was snow.

How much snow would your city get?

Good morning ladies and gentlemen. It’s the first Friday in September, and you know what? I’m feeling good. There’s a crisp feeling in the air here in the Midwest, football is back, and I can smell winter coming like 80 people farting on a tram.

What better way to start this lovely Friday than watching some Alaskan black bear cubs play in the rain? You can thank me later as this video is guaranteed to get your Friday off to a happy start.

“This bear family has been around the summer of 2021. I border Alaska’s Chugach State Park and I’m on the edge of Anchorage so these are very wild bears! Mama knew I was up on my 3rd floor deck but didn’t care.”

It’s barely rained all summer in Utah, but a recent storm has dumped multiple inches of water in and around Park City forcing Deer Valley to close operations today, August 19th, 2021.

I’m sure the locals aren’t complaining as the Parleys Canyon fire is still burning just miles from downtown Park City and Deer Valley Resort. The recent rain will help the state as it’s plagued by an excessive drought, but Utah is going to need a lot more moisture before they’re in the clear.

I’m sure the mountain bikers will rejoice that their trails will be a little tackier and less dusty thanks to the recent rainfall. I was talking to some riders a couple weeks ago when I was in Park City, and they were telling me that had never seen the trails so dry.

I’m certainly hoping that more rain (and eventually snow) is on the way for Utah, or else things are going to get bad in the coming years.

“That was really hard to see. We’ve never seen that. We’ve gone to the historical society and asked and it’s just not anything anyone has seen in their lifetimes out here.” David Boyd, Public Affairs Officer for The White River National Forest

Bummer news out of Colorado where Hanging Lake’s once crystal clear water have turned a shade of murky brown after the area was inundated with monsoon rains and mudslides. Denver 7 reports officials have reviewed aerial footage of the site but a team of specialists tasked with conducting a survey are unable to as the area in the heart of Glenwood Canyon is inaccessible due to storm damage.  While the extent of any potential damage to Hanging Lake remains unclear, experts believe it will not be permanent:

“That fine sediment will settle out with time. The water column will become clear. The bed will have a lot of mud on it, but that will gradually be flushed out and algae will grow on top of it.”  -Colorado State University Geology Professor Ellen Wohl
