On Sunday & Monday, a ginormous rainstorm rammed through the Northeast. This has resulted in some catastrophic flooding, especially in the White Mountains of New Hampshire. Towns throughout the Mount Washington Valley saw substantial damage due to the heavy rain and wind, along with the melting snowpack.

In Gorham, one video submitted to WMUR by Nick Goodwin showed flooding from Moose Brook leading to trucks being pushed through the stream.

In Jackson, the flooding resulted in some unbelievable scenes. Andrew Drummond, who runs the White Mountain Ski Company, shared a variety of brutal videos of the damage caused by the flooding.

Drummond’s first video down below, which was shared by the Out of Collective, shows Jackson Falls, which is typically a quaint series of waterfalls, became a set of roaring rapids that would give even the most tenured kayaker chills.

Lieutenant Kevin Bennett of the Jackson Fire Department described the scope of the flooding to the Boston Globe:

“Every major secondary river was maxed out…a lot of places flooded out that I’d never seen before.”

From what we’ve seen, the flooding likely has caused significant damage to homes and businesses across the region. For now, ski resorts in the region, like Attitash, Bretton Woods, Cranmore, Loon, Pleasant Mountain, Sunday River, and Wildcat, remain closed.

We’ll keep you posted on how to help out these communities in need.

Major amounts of flooding led to the closure of Death Valley National Park on Sunday, August 20, after Tropical Storm Hilary battered California.

Flash floods began in the park on Sunday morning, with 1.04 inches of rainfall landing at Furnace Creek Visitor Center by 1:30pm. Furnace Creek typically receives an average 2.2 inches of rainfall throughout an entire year.

Park rangers are reminding travelers to ‘Turn around, don’t drown.’ Flash floods are rivers of mud and rocks that can easily sweep cars off roads. Emergency responders may not be able to reach people in need.” -NPS

Death Valley National Park initially announced a partial closure beginning on Saturday, August 19, shutting down campgrounds, roads, and the Furnace Creek Visitors Center in anticipation of the heavy rainfall.

The National Park service is yet to announce a reopening date or time for Death Valley.

Last year, on August 5, 1.7 inches of rain fell on Death Valley National Park in just three hours, stranding residents, visitors, and employees for 12 hours. The damage led to months of repairs and a full closure for two weeks.

Joshua Tree National Park fully shut down operations before the storm began, with a full closure scheduled between August 19 at 11am and August 21 at 5pm. The service has released no updates on the reopening as of noon on Monday.

Floods seem to be happening more and more, with devastating results in towns from Vermont to California. But one guy took a gamble on a what is mitigating solution that paid off in a big way.

In the early 1980s, David Doolaege invented water-filled structures as a solution to control floodwater, driven by concerns over environmental damage. Traditional sandbagging methods were slow, expensive, and labor-intensive. Doolaege realized that sandbags represented merely weight and mass, so he decided to use water as a modern alternative.

He crafted the first water structure by filling two inner party balloons with water, placed inside a third balloon. This innovative approach demonstrated that water could effectively control water during floods. He continued testing, moving from his bathtub to his front yard and later to a nearby creek and the Van Duzen river.

Local officials, dealing with water quality issues, encouraged Doolaege to explore construction applications for his invention. The Clean Water Act guidelines frowned upon earthen fill discharges from cofferdams due to their environmental impact. Doolaege’s water-filled cofferdams offered a promising alternative and were used in various projects, such as preventing water turbidity during a landslide near a Bald Eagle nesting site.

From those early experiments, the technology of in-stream water control has evolved, culminating in AquaDams – the solution for flood control projects. For more information or a free quote, visit our website or call 1-800-682-9283.

It’s been an extremely wet summer so far in New England, as the person writing this article is very annoyed that every weekend, the rain derails any outdoor activity plans of his.

This has happened throughout New England, which has created havoc in mountain communities. On Friday, a portion of U.S. Route 4 in Killington was engulfed by a mudslide. The mudslide occurred in the area of Mission Farm Road, which is nearby the base terminal of the Skyeship Gondola. Twenty feet of debris were spread across the road, and it remains closed due to cleanup efforts. Some were reminded of the scenes from Hurricane Irene back in 2011, which caused severe damage all around Vermont.

East Mountain and Bear Mountain Road, which many use to reach the ski resort, also saw serious damage from Friday’s rainstorm. East Mountain Road, which was repaved a couple of months ago, has been washed out due to the raging waters. Abbey Hosle, who is a local resident, shared these photos of the damage on the Killington Locals+ group.

Here’s what East Mountain Road looked like on Saturday morning. Rain has occurred every day since, so the situation has not gotten better.

Unfortunately, the rain has continued to be an issue through today (Monday, July 10th). Yesterday, Vermont Governor Phil Scott issued a state of emergency. A flash flood warning has been place across Vermont, with multiple inches of rain expected through Tuesday night. The result has been severe flooding in other Vermont mountain towns like Londonderry, Ludlow, and Woodstock. The video below is of the Ottauquechee River in Quechee, Vermont.

Abbey told me that everyone outside of people that live in the residences on East or Bear Mountain should avoid using East Mountain Road for the foreseeable future. Rutland County will likely be dealing with these flooding issues for at least the next couple of weeks due to this cruel summer. If you plan to visit Killington, or Vermont in general, in the near future, check to see if they’re any road closures before you go. “The Merced river levels have started to rise and based on the river forecast and predictions it is expected to rise above ten feet which is the flood level.”Chelsie Layman

As the weather warms after a historic snow year in the Sierra Nevada, much of Yosemite National Park will be temporarily closed as of today due to flooding concerns from the melting snowpack.

KYOU reports the eastern section of Yosemite Valley will stay off limits to the public until at least May 3. Campground and lodging reservations in the eastern valley will automatically be canceled and refunded.

Other sections including western Yosemite Valley will remain open. Day hikers who purchased wilderness permits for areas for closed areas can have them rescheduled for alternate trailheads as space allows.

California’s state climatologist Michael Anderson warns that rising temps will speed up the snowmelt and double the amount of water flowing into some of the state’s reservoirs.

A layer of dust in Northern Colorado could put the state at risk of some fairly heavy flooding in the future. According to CBS News Colorado, dust from the four corners region of the state has made its way as far north as Rabbit Ears Pass, carried onto the state’s snowpack by the wind.

“It really accelerates and increases the rate in which snow melts. The sun is the big driver of snowmelt in Colorado, and you add dust or things like ash and particles from fire that really lowers the reflectivity, meaning the snow is going to absorb a lot more energy and melt the snowpack faster.” – CSU’s Steven Fassnacht

The last time a large layer of dust has the reached northern Colorado was back in 2006, with the weather event creating both a potential for heavy flooding and lower water levels in some rivers come the fall.

According to CBS, floods caused by this layer of dust are not likely to be as significant as those that occurred in 2013. So, if you live in Colorado, there’s no need to panic.

“We appreciate your patience and understanding as EMS works on the repairs needed to the roads and other work required that allows us all to get to the Ski Area. We hope to see you all real soon.” –Alta Sierra Ski Resort

Alta Sierra Resort in Southern California (not to be confused with Alta in Utah) has been forced to suspend operations to two weeks due to massive flooding following an influx of snow that has caused major damage to the highway that accesses the resort. The notice was issued by notice from the U.S. Forest Service as Highway 155 is closed in both directions due to a massive slide potential. Sending our well wishes to the resort, its patrons and the road crews tasked with cleaning up the mess. We will be sure to update this situation as more information becomes available.

After a disastrous week of flooding the forced the evacuation of nearly 15,000 visitors and caused severe damage to park infrastructure, Yellowstone Superintendent Cam Sholly announced they expect to partially reopen Monday during call with residents and tourist in Cody Wyoming.

The Star Tribune reports the entirety of Yellowstone will remain closed through the weekend but the southern loop will reopen Monday at the earliest. A reservation system limiting visitors will likely be instituted to avoid overcrowding but details on the plan have not yet been ironed out.

Superintendent Cam Sholly is working with Yellowstone’s gateway communities to determine how best to keep enough tourist flowing into the park to keep local business afloat while not exceeding the reduced capacity caused by the continued partial shutdown:

“We’re not necessarily trying to find perfect here. My goal is to balance access to Yellowstone to the best degree possible.”

If the park was to reopen early next week, it will be without a reservation at first. That system could take weeks to set up. During the interim, overnight accommodations inside the park will probably be reduced. There’s still a lot of questions that remain unanswered about what park operations will look like moving forward as park officials wait for flood waters recede to make a full assessment. Park officials are also preparing for the possibility of additional flooding over the weekend.

At this time Superintendent Cam Sholly believes reservations may last into next season depending on the extent of damage to the northern loop. Buses and other large vehicles will probably be allowed on park roads once they reopen to the public. The road that divides the two loops should also be accessible at that time.

This is a developing story and we will be sure to update as soon as new information becomes available.
