Caberfae Peaks is currently in a prime window of cold temperatures for snowmaking, along with fresh snowfall. This situation has been derailed though by constant power outages. The power lines that connect the ski resort need replacing, but aren’t a priority for the utility company, Consumers Energy, due to the ski resort’s remote location.
With this being the heart of snowmaking season, Caberfae Peaks has dealt with numerous power outages. In response to these blackouts, Caberfae made a public plea to its customers to file a complaint with the Michigan Public Service Commission.
After this plea to the public, Consumers Energy has been more communicative with the ski resort. After losing power twice on Wednesday, the utility company worked steadfastly to restore it. The power stayed on overnight, so they were able to make some snow.
A spokesperson for Consumers Energy released the following statement to 9 & 10 News:
โWe apologize for the electric reliability issues Caberfae Peaks Ski Resort has experienced when conducting snow making operations early in the season. The circuit feeding Caberfae Peaks is in a multi-year project to increase capacity and improve reliability. There have been two other sections of the upgrade that have been completed with more identified for future repairs. For the issue they are experiencing now, there are several long-term repairs needed to serve the resort and our team has identified those fixes, with work starting today. In the meantime, we will explore short-term actions that can improve reliability until this section of line can be replaced. We will continue to remain in close contact with the resort throughout this issue.โ
Caberfae Peaks will be opening for the season on December 2nd. They’ll be opening with 7+ runs and four lifts.
