In a heartening turn of events for the ski community, Indy Pass and Unofficial Networks have teamed up to breathe new life into Hickory Ski Center in Warrensburg, New York. This collaborative effort marks a significant milestone for the beloved ski center, set to operate its lifts again after an eight-year hiatus.

The Hickory Ski Center, with its rich history dating back to 1946 and founded by 10th Mountain Division veterans, had been a cornerstone for the local ski community. Its recent struggles with operational costs, especially soaring insurance prices, had cast a shadow over its future. However, the center’s relentless spirit and the support from Tim Konrad, the publisher of Unofficial Networks, and Erik Mogensen, CEO of Entabeni Systems and Indy Pass, have sparked a glimmer of hope.

Konrad’s personal connection and passion for Hickory, coupled with his awareness of the center’s struggles, propelled him to reach out to Mogensen. This call ignited a chain reaction of support, leading to Indy Pass and Unofficial Networks stepping in to offer a much-needed lifeline. Mogensen’s vision to involve more organizations in supporting independent ski areas aligns perfectly with this initiative, offering a sustainable future for these cherished local gems.

The partnership has resulted in Hickory Ski Center reopening as well as joining the Indy Pass for the 2023/24 season.

Sue Catana, Hickory’s manager and the daughter of its founders, expresses deep gratitude for this intervention. The collaboration between Unofficial Networks, Indy Pass, and Entabeni Systems not only ensures the operation of lifts for the season but also brings hope for many more seasons to come. Furthermore, the team from Indy Pass and Entabeni will offer their expertise in streamlining operations at Hickory, reinforcing the center’s journey toward sustainability.

The collaboration of Indy Pass and Unofficial Networks in the revival of Hickory Ski Center reaffirms the two entities’ dedication to safeguarding the unique culture and legacy of independent skiing.

In commemorating this remarkable achievement, we are reminded of the immense strength of community cooperation and joint efforts. It is our hope that the rejuvenation of Hickory Ski Center extends beyond a local victory; it serves as a shining example and source of inspiration for small, independent ski areas across the globe.

About Hickory:

Hickory Ski Center, nestled above the Hudson River in Warrensburg, NY, stands as a hidden gem in the world of skiing. This quaint center, reminiscent of the 1950s, charms visitors with its vintage lodge, complete with a unique, handmade fireplace, and a welcoming front porch that offers panoramic views of its main slope, “The Hunny Run”. Ideal for relaxed lunches or après-ski socializing, this porch epitomizes the center’s community spirit.

These trails, maintained by a dedicated community of members and volunteers, preserve the authenticity of old-school skiing, untouched by modern machinery. The tree skiing and steep runs off the summit are highlights of the terrain, especially on a snowy day. The ski area relies entirely on natural snowfall for an authentic experience.

Hickory’s The atmosphere is distinctly family-friendly, welcoming skiers of all ages. Practicality is key in dress code, with skiers opting for comfort and utility over modern ski fashion.

Official Press Release:

INDY PASS AND UNOFFICIAL NETWORKS TEAM UP TO KEEP NEW YORK’S HICKORY SKI CENTER OPEN

23/24 INDY PASS WAITLIST TO CLOSE ON DECEMBER 10th

GRANBY, COLORADO – Indy Pass and Unofficial Networks announced today that they have combined efforts to provide financial assistance to Hickory Ski Center in Warrensburg, New York, so the resort may run its lifts for the first time in eight years.

The ski center will join the Indy Pass for the 2023/24 season, and season passes go on sale today at skihickory.com. Hickory pass holders will be eligible to purchase Indy AddOn Passes at a 30% discount. The Indy Pass will close the 2023/2024 waitlist on Sunday, December 10th.

Hickory Ski Center was founded in 1946 by veterans of the 10th Mountain Division and has served the surrounding community and offered uphill traffic only since 2016. With rising costs, specifically insurance, the ski area faced an uncertain future until their plight caught the attention of Tim Konrad, publisher of Unofficial Networks.

“My family spends much of the winter in the Adirondacks, and I have been ski touring at Hickory since 2015. Over the years, I’ve been keeping close tabs on their struggle to reopen lifts, and when I learned how far they had come and how close they were to achieving their goal, I knew we had to do something. So I called Erik at Indy Pass to discuss how we could offer our support,” said Konrad.

“After Tim called, we did a quick assessment and decided that Entabeni would step in on this one. It is important to recognize the collaboration between Entabeni, Indy Pass and Unofficial Networks. The more organizations we can get involved to stabilize these small, independent areas, the better our chances of scaling this movement,” said Erik Mogensen, CEO of Entabeni and Indy Pass.

“We have been working with our Hickory skiing community to help overcome the financial obstacles that could prevent the opening of the lifts at Hickory. The emergence of Tim and Erik with their lifeline has put us in a position to operate this season with lift certification, and hopefully for many more to come,” said Sue Catana, Hickory manager and daughter of founders Fran and Hans Winbauer.

The Indy Pass and Entabeni team will also consult with Hickory management on how to streamline operations and become more sustainable.

Indy Pass and parent company, Entabeni Systems support independent resorts from Europe to Japan, but primarily in the US and Canada. On October 18, 2023, Black Mountain, New Hampshire, announced that support from Indy Pass would enable it to remain open for the coming season and has since hired a new GM and retained ski resort turn-around expert Andy Shephard to help secure a buyer.

The Indy Pass is a popular multi-resort ski and snowboard pass designed for winter sports enthusiasts seeking affordability and variety. The pass offers access to a diverse range of independent ski resorts across not only North America but Japan and Europe as well. The Indy Pass has gained a loyal following among riders looking to explore lesser-known, locally-owned mountains. With an Indy Pass, skiers and snowboarders can enjoy the charm of smaller resorts while avoiding the crowds and high prices often associated with larger, more famous destinations.

Last season, it was announced that the Indy Pass would be changing hands and that Entabeni Systems, headed by Erik Mogensen, would take over ownership of the Pass product.

Since taking over the helm of the Indy Pass, the new ownership has been making big moves to keep skiing independent, like stepping in to save Black Mountain, NH. They have also not shied away from a direct approach to marketing the Indy Pass.

Over the weekend, The Indy Pass social media channels posted an image of a sizeable lift line at Arapahoe Basin from their opening day (Arapahoe Basin was the only ski resort open this past weekend in Colorado, so large lift lines were to be expected). The post that appeared on the Indy Pass Facebook and Instagram accounts read, “Lift-serviced skiing and riding is underway in Colorado, and Indy Pass would like to take this opportunity to remind everyone that joining our waitlist is the first step to recovering from your mega pass trauma.”

The post caught the ire of some, most notable Mountain Collective CEO Todd Burnette, who responded to the post by commenting, “Mega Lame post guys… A-Basin is the only resort in North America open today. Lots of work to open a ski hill in October. This pic is not really representative of a “mega” pass. Disingenuous representation at best. Indy Pass“.

To which Indy Pass social channel replied, Todd Burnette Indy Pass is committed to supporting its partners and pass holders, sometimes with playful posts. No one is taking aim at A-Basin or the work it takes to open any kind of ski hill. The line was real, the photo was real, and we are not in the least being “disingenuous” in saying that we offer another option. However, given that you are the CEO of the Mountain Collective Pass, we can appreciate that you have a different opinion and won’t call you “Mega Lame” for sharing it here.”

This very direct approach by the Indy Pass when addressing the wider ski industry, particularly the mega passes and their partnering resorts, is very much a conscience decision by Erik Mogensen, who told us, “The mega passes dominate the narrative and media in the ski industry, and as the new owners of the Indy Pass we will fight to bring attention to the smaller, independently owned ski areas that deserve more of a voice.”

Erik went on to tell us that nearly all the media coverage from the past weekend stated that Arapahoe Basin was the only ski area open in North America. Todd Burnett also stated this belief in his comment left on the Indy Passes’ social post, when in fact, Andes Tower Hills ski area in Minnesota (an Indy Pass partner ski area) was also open for skiing and riding this weekend. Erik pointed to this as an example of the little guy being left out of the conversation.

One thing is clear: The Indy Pass has undergone significant changes under the leadership of Erik Mogensen and Entabeni Systems and is embracing a bold and direct marketing approach. The Indy Pass aims to challenge the dominance of mega passes and bring independently owned-ski resorts back into the spotlight. Their recent social media post underlined their commitment to offering an alternative. This passionate advocacy for smaller ski areas, like Andes Tower Hills, and its direct marketing approach look to bring attention to the independent ski areas, regardless of how some might feel about it.

We just received some exciting news from the Indy Pass, as they will be providing resources to help Black Mountain of New Hampshire open this winter.

Last week, the New Hampshire ski area announced that they won’t open this winter due to various economic challenges. With this assistance, they’ll now reopen for the 2023-24 season but will also be listed for sale. The Fichera family will use this time to look for a new owner, with the help of Andy Shepard, who helped save Saddleback in Maine.

The official press release is below. For more information on how this all went down, check out the Storm Skiing Journal’s piece on the matter here.

BLACK MOUNTAIN TO OPEN THIS SEASON

The Fichera family will operate the ski area for one more season after Indy Pass provides resources to operate this season and assistance in finding a buyer for the historic ski area.

Grand County, CO (October 18, 2023) – Indy Pass parent company Entabeni Systems announced today that it has reached an agreement with Black Mountain in Jackson, New Hampshire, to remain open for the 2023/2024 season.

The Fichera family, longtime owners of the resort, announced on October 11th that they could not operate due to circumstances beyond their control. The mountain, which has been in continuous operation since 1935, will be offered for sale as an operating ski area. Entabeni founder Erik Mogensen will lead an industry-wide effort to find a sustainable solution.

“We all have a role to play in keeping skiing independent, and it is time to step up,” said Mogensen. “We are not interested in owning ski resorts, but are firmly committed to supporting independent operators like Black Mountain. The struggles that John and his family overcame for decades are the same struggles many ski areas across the country are facing everyday.”

Andy Shepard, whose career has been focused on turning around struggling ski areas, will join the effort at Indy Pass. Andy led the efforts that produced successful outcomes at Saddleback, BigRock, Quoggy Jo, and Black Mountain of Maine. “The Ficheras have played a critical role in keeping one of the country’s most historic ski areas running for the last 30 years. We should celebrate their accomplishments as we look for the next owner of Black Mountain,” said Shepard.

“We joined the Indy Pass originally to boost awareness and generate a few skier visits. Never did we realize the partnership would be so vital to the survival of Black Mountain as an independent ski area,” said GM and owner John Fichera. “I am proud to collaborate with the passionate folks at Indy Pass to find a solution for Black Mountain and affordable skiing.”

Black Mountain will announce an opening date and operating schedule soon. Previously purchased 23/24 Black Mountain season passes will be honored and available again at Blackmt.com. Indy Pass holders will have access to the standard two free days and one additional discount day all season long.

“John Fichera was one of the first owners to believe in the Indy Pass, and we are privileged to help Black Mountain operate this season,” said Indy Pass founder Doug Fish. “We encourage all Indy Passholders to visit this gem of a ski area this season.”

Purchasing an Indy Pass is only possible by joining the waitlist at indyskipass.com, which remains open at this time. The Pass is committed to offering affordable skiing and riding at over 180 authentic destinations across three continents.

After a winter of record revenue and season pass sales, Whaleback Mountain in Enfield, New Hampshire is pushing for a huge 2023-24 season.

In Whaleback’s 2023 annual report, they announced that two major capital projects are planned in the future. A new surface lift will help them open terrain quicker, and they have applied for a federal grant to maximize Whaleback’s snowmaking capacity.

One of their upcoming projects will be the installation of a new surface lift, which they are aiming to begin work on this summer. The surface lift being considered is a rope tow with a handlebar and a poma. An example of this kind of lift is pictured below.

The surface lift will start at the bottom of the skier’s right of the Lower Spout trail, and end above the top of the racing hut. It will be located on the skier’s right of Lower Spout (pictured below), which is their racing trail. The lift will also give access to the Canyon and Scrimshaw trails, which is home to their terrain park. The new lift will help them get the mountain open earlier in the season, and help improve skier/rider flow during peak periods.

The lift will be installed on the left side of Lower Spout (the trail on the right side of this image).

In terms of snowmaking, they have applied for a federal grant to maximize their snowmaking capacity. With Whaleback being a non-profit organization, major capital projects are funded by fundraising. In order for the grant to succeed, they need to match half the funds for the grant. So far, they’ve raised $60,000 of the required $100,000. Snowmaking has been a struggle at Whaleback for decades, so this move would be a transformational change for the ski area.

With this grant, they aim to purchase the additional snowmaking pump to maximize the new snowmaking equipment, do electrical work, and reroute some water piping before the 2023-24 season. If they aren’t able to secure the grant, they still plan on purchasing some snowmaking equipment.

Over the past couple of years, many major improvements have been made at the Whale. This includes the installation of a disc golf course, adding multiple summer activities, renovating the double chairlift, making snowmaking improvements, installing night lights, and becoming an Indy Pass allied partner. As someone who lives around twenty minutes away from the mountain, it’s exciting to see Whaleback grow so quickly.

If you want to help out Whaleback with these capital improvements, you can donate to them here

The Indy Pass has taken a significant leap forward by extending its offerings to include premier ski resorts in Japan. This expansion has added an exciting international dimension to the already popular pass, providing skiers and snowboarders with the opportunity to explore the renowned powder and unique cultural experiences that Japanese ski areas have to offer.

Last season, we were fortunate enough to tag along with a crew of ski industry folks hosted by the Indy Pass and Japan Ski Tours. The ski trip was remarkable! For nearly two weeks we visited the ski areas of Japan that are included on the Indy Pass. This is what we found:

Japan is widely celebrated for its extraordinary snowfall, often referred to as “Japow.” The Japanese resorts featured on the Indy Pass provide access to this legendary powder, allowing passholders to revel in the exhilaration of gliding through deep, light, and abundant snow. The snow quality and quantity in Japan’s ski areas are unmatched, making it a dream destination for winter sports enthusiasts.

Not only do the Japanese ski resorts on the Indy Pass deliver exceptional snow conditions, but they also showcase stunning landscapes and top-notch facilities. From majestic mountain ranges to picturesque villages, the scenery in Japan is truly awe-inspiring. Skiers and snowboarders can immerse themselves in the tranquil beauty of the Japanese Alps or enjoy the charm of traditional hot spring resorts located near the slopes.

Furthermore, Japanese ski areas cater to a wide range of abilities and preferences. Whether you’re a beginner looking for gentle slopes, an intermediate rider seeking groomed trails, or an advanced shredder craving challenging tree runs and off-piste adventures, there is terrain suited for everyone. The resorts provide well-maintained slopes, efficient lift systems, and excellent ski school programs to ensure an enjoyable experience for all levels of expertise.

The cultural aspect of skiing in Japan is an added bonus. Passholders have the opportunity to embrace the rich traditions and warm hospitality that the country is famous for. From sampling authentic Japanese cuisine, such as sushi and ramen, to relaxing in natural hot springs known as onsens, the Japanese ski resort experience extends beyond the slopes and offers a captivating blend of adventure and cultural immersion.

By including Japanese ski resorts in their portfolio, the Indy Pass has demonstrated their commitment to delivering diverse and exceptional skiing opportunities to their passholders. This expansion allows winter sports enthusiasts to embark on an international ski adventure, exploring the magic of Japan’s snow-covered mountains and creating lifelong memories. Whether it’s the world-class powder, breathtaking landscapes, or immersive cultural experiences, the addition of Japanese ski areas to the Indy Pass has elevated its appeal and made it an even more desirable choice for passionate skiers and snowboarders.

Eagle Point Resort just concluded its best season ever, as the Utah ski resort had a year full of powder. What comes next for Eagle Point though is a multitude of exciting changes. In a letter to their guests, Eagle Point recapped their season and announced what projects they’ll be working on in the coming months.

This summer, they’ll be hosting a multitude of events, and improving their mountain biking park. Some of the events include a Mountain Archery Fest, the Crusher in the Tushar bike race, Pioneer Day celebrations, and The Tushars Mountain Runs high-elevation races. Their mountain biking operations will see a significant improvement with the addition of mountain biking hooks on the Lookout Chair.

Various chairlifts will also undergo renovations this offseason. The Monarch Lift will get an upgrade to its electrical control system, allowing them to more easily identify and repair issues. The capacity of the Skyline Lift will also be increased, which will help them avoid skipping chairs at the loading terminal. The Canyonside Lift will be adding lap restraints (i.e. a bar) for winter and summer guests.

The major project announced by the resort is a new connector chairlift that will go over Highway 53. Currently, you can ski down to the lower mountain (Elk Meadows) from the upper mountain (Mt. Holly), but you can’t ski to Mt. Holly from Elk Meadows. This means that you have to take a shuttle bus from the Canyonside Lodge to reach the Skyline Lodge and Mt. Holly.

The new lift will run from the bottom of Anasazi Freefall, up Tunnel Vision and Elk Meadows, and end near the Skyline Lodge. According to the concept images from Eagle Point, it would be a fixed-grip quad chairlift from SkyTrac. They will start work on the new lift this summer.  The project will likely take a couple of offseasons, with no official opening date announced yet by Eagle Point.

The projected lift line of the new Connector lift.

The other major addition will be 27 new condominiums, most of which will be available for rentals. These smaller units are aimed at providing a ski-in/out option for those who want to stay on the mountain at a more affordable rate.

The official letter from Eagle Point Resort is below.

In a surprise announcement, Indy Pass is ending sales of its 2023/24 pass at midnight on Monday, April 10th.  From what we understand, the good people behind Indy don’t want to see these wonderful ski areas overrun the way other resorts on big pass products have been.

By capping sales, the resorts on the Indy Pass will remain uncrowded, which was one of the aspects that made many of these ski areas special, to begin with.

So if you want an Indy Pass, you better move quickly.

Official Press Release Below

23/24 Indy Pass Sales to End at Midnight on Monday, April 10

After experiencing record sales, sales will be paused to evaluate capacity for the upcoming season.

Grand County, CO. (April 9, 2023) – The Indy Pass announced today that pass sales for the 23/24 season will end on Monday, April 10, at Midnight. A limited number of passes may be released this fall after evaluating capacity with our resort partners for the upcoming season.

“To preserve the independent and uncrowded skiing experience we all know and love, we are pumping the brakes on pass sales. We remain committed to each of our unique ski areas on the Indy Pass and plan to work with them over the summer to evaluate capacity limits and shape the best possible winter for our shared passholders, said Doug Fish, Indy Pass Founder.

In prior years, Indy Passes have remained on sale through mid-winter. However, record sales during the 22/23 season, unprecedented passholder renewals, and new passholders for 23/24 have precipitated this decision.

Mt. Hood Meadows and Mt. Ashland Renew for 23/24

Mt. Hood Meadows and Mt. Ashland, both in Oregon, will join 102 resorts that are returning for the 23/24 season. “We had a great first season on the Indy Pass and continue to see strong visitation from passholders across the US,” said Dave Tragethon, Mt Hood Meadows marketing director.

Last week, the Indy Pass released an updated list of ski resorts that are confirmed partners for the 2023-24 season. So far, 102 of the 105 partners have confirmed that they will be returning for the 2023-24 season.

The only holdouts are Snow Valley, Mt. Ashland, and Mt. Hood Meadows. Snow Valley was acquired by the Alterra Mountain Company this year, so they’re heading to the Ikon Pass. Mt. Ashland confirmed to the Storm Skiing Journal that they’ll be returning to the Indy Pass this season. Mt. Hood Meadows remains unconfirmed, but they’re expected to return.

The Indy Pass is expected to bring on at least a dozen more partners for next season. With the addition of a physical pass and the elimination of service fees, this is the time to buy an Indy Pass.

The official press release from the Indy Pass is below.

Grand County, CO. (March 29, 2023) – The Indy Pass released today an updated list of resorts that have committed for the 23/24 season. As of this date, 102 out of 105 Indy Alpine resorts participating in 22/23 will return for next season. Snow Valley, Mt. Hood Meadows, and Mt. Ashland are the three uncommitted resorts. Alterra acquired Snow Valley, Mt. Hood Meadows, and Mt. Ashland are expected to renew.

Allied and Cross Country resort lists will be published after the Indy season ends on April 30. Indy Pass Founder Doug Fish said, “97 percent of Indy Partner Resorts returning sends a clear message that the Indy Revolution is alive and well. In fact, more than a dozen new resorts are already in the cue to join the coalition.”

Continued Growth Expected – Indy Passholders can expect significant growth in partner options for the 23/24 season in both the domestic and international markets.  Fish continued, “Our efforts will now shift from confirming renewals to expansion opportunities in markets where the Indy Pass has room for more partners.”

Waitlist Pass Sales Will End March 30th – 23/24 passes are only on sale for people who signed up for the waitlist before March 23rd. The Adult Base Pass is $299, and the Adult Indy+ Pass is $399 for zero blackout days (see complete waitlist pass pricing below). Sales to General Public Begin on April 1st.

If you live in the Northeast and are trying to figure out where to shred this upcoming weekend, you should head up to Black Mountain of Maine. The Maine ski area is offering FREE lift tickets for April 1st and 2nd.

Black Mountain of Maine checks a lot of boxes for many types of skiers. They have an extensive glade network, a growing uphill skinning community, snowmaking on 75% of their terrain, and a great nordic trail network.

The Indy Pass partner has a variety of good lift ticket deals throughout the season too, so even if you can’t make it up for these two days, pick up a 2023-24 Indy Pass to get two days there for next season, or keep an eye on what lift ticket deals they’ll have going on for 2023-24.
