Former Olympic snowboarder turned YouTuber Trevor Jacob, 30, was facing a maximum sentence of 20 years behind bars for intentionally crashing his single prop 1940 Taylorcraft to get views and promote a sponsor for the video which was titled “I Crashed My Airplane.” In the end, United States District Judgeย John F. Walter sentence Jacob to 6 months in federal prison for obstruction of justice
Jacob confessed deliberately crashing the airplane and in carefully staged stunt while flying from Lompoc City Airport to Mammoth Lakes. In the video he claimed the engine failed before he jumps out of the door with a parachute on his back.
Jacob didn’t report the crash until two days later and stalled investigators, telling them he didn’t know where the plane went down. He further interfered with the official investigation of the crash by going back to the crash site with a helicopter and removing the wreckage and disposing of it.
The video that put Jacob in federal prison is still up on YouTube and currently has 4.4 million views. No reports on when he will begin his jail time.
